Writing a Data Analyst Resume: Do’s and Don’ts
The latest study shows, that recruiters spend between seven to nine seconds to view your resume.
Here are some key tips to make sure your resume stands out:
Keep It to One Page
Even if you have 30 years of experience, focus on the experience that matters most to the job you’re applying for, and on your latest experience.
Design Resume for Job Title
For example, if you’re applying for a junior data analyst role at two different companies, the required skills will likely be similar. Optimise your resume for the job title rather than customising it for every single job description.
Simple Resume Template
Simplicity and clarity often work best. No colors, no extra elements - they are just distractions.
Highlight Keywords and Relevant Experience
Recruiters scan resumes in an F format.

Make sure to use relevant keywords early in your resume and highlight your most relevant experience right at the top.
Use Bullet Points
It helps quickly grasp your accomplishments and responsibilities.
Add Links to Your Portfolio
Make sure it is easy for Recruiter to access your Portfolio. Briefly describe what was the goal of your project, what you did and what was the result. For example:
Sentiment Analysis Project
Developed a machine learning model to predict mental conditions based on verbal conversations. Utilized logistic regression to train the dataset, focusing on identifying key emotional indicators from text data. Achieved [mention accuracy/metrics if available] accuracy in classification, demonstrating strong proficiency in predictive modeling and text analytics. This project highlights my ability to apply data science techniques to real-world problems, particularly in the mental health domain.
Share Your Resume as PDF
Many recruiters have issues opening CVs that are not in PDF format. Make it easier to hire you
Check For Typos
Attention to details is crucial for data analysts. When I see typos in the resume - it is a 🚩 red flag to me. It takes 2 minutes to run your resume through Spell check in Microsoft Word or ChatGPT
And another advice I will give you - approach data hunt as a data analytics project. If you applied to 100 jobs and didn’t hear anything back - make changes to your resume and apply for the next 100.
Keep tweaking and analysing what work and what didn’t. Also I recommend you to create an Excel/Google sheet to keep track of jobs you applied to and what CV resume version you applied with.
